Eye on Community 04.23.2010

Well met, folks!

We hope you had a great past week with Aion and that you're eager to jump into the fray that is another double XP weekend!

Martin "Amboss" Rabl, German community manager, decided to part ways with NCSOFT and explore new pastures. Martin has been a hard-working and serious employee who always put in long hours to get the job done during his time working on Aion and before that, City of Heroes. Not only did he contribute to the Community Team as a passionate person who always went above and beyond for the players, but also in being a great friend and awesome teammate.

We have begun the search for a new German community manager to match the clashes of steel previously thundered afar by Amboss. (Amboss means "anvil" in German.) If you are member of the German community of Aion and have a query or comment, consult our German community coordinator, Lars "Lisertan" Malcharek.

Starting this week, we are changing the way we present our Eye on Community articles. Rather than always answering a "Question of Week" posed by the community, sometimes we will focus on matters that are difficult for you to formulate questions around but that we feel require special attention. Don't worry! The Question of the Week is still around, but sometimes it will morph into the Topic of the Week. And now, with no further ado, here's this week's topic: "Getting Started with the Public Test Server."

Topic of the Week

Getting Started with the Public Test Server

The public test server (PTS) is accessed with a separate Aion client. You must install this PTS client, even if Aion is installed on your PC already. There are two ways to go about with this, one which requires much less time and bandwidth. Keep in mind that while these instructions will help you get started, the PTS server will not be available before the 29th of April.

Method 1: Duplication of Already Existing Installation

  1. Browse to the Aion installation directory on your local hard drive.
  2. Copy the folder and paste it into the same location (for example, "C:/Program Files/NCSOFT/").
  3. Rename the new folder to AionPTS. The name must be changed to exactly "AionPTS" for the copy to work.
  4. Boot up the NCSOFT launcher. The NCSOFT launcher should detect the newly created folder as the PTS client and list it in the left pane of the launcher.
  5. Patch (if needed), and launch the game!
  6. Log in using the same username and password that you do as on the normal servers. Enjoy!

Method 2: Fresh Installation

  1. Download the 9.8 GB Aion PTS client installer from one of the following locations:
  2. Launch the installer and follow the installation instructions. A new game title, "AionPTS," will appear in your NCSOFT launcher.
  3. Patch (if needed), and launch the game!
  4. Log in using the same username and password that you do as on the normal servers. Enjoy!

Enjoying playing the test version, and let us know about any comments or questions you have or bugs you find. Please note that the PTS is not a suitable server to play main characters on, since characters may at any point in time be removed or modified due to testing reasons. In other words, such characters are temporary.

In Other News

Let's take a look at a few of the notable things we've seen out there this week:

[Aion Machinima] RedemptionNill on Kalil
It's not often that we're so impressed with a submission that we feature the same player twice. It's extremely rare that we feature that player again a third time. Well, Nill (Kalil) has proven us wrong. This is her third feature here in the Eye on Community; it is arguably her best work to date. Enjoy!

[Aion Fanfic] A Journey's StartRigrin on Castor
This is a beautifully written character back-story. With a little luck, being featured here might push Rigrin to write some more stories of his adventures in Ateria. We hope so!

[Aion PvP] Gladiator PvPKolik on Kahrun
This video shows some interesting PvP action with Kolik (on his Gladiator) terrorizing the Abyss on Kahrun. This furback likes to collect sun-blessed scalps, so all you Elyos watch out!

[Aion PvP] Nezekan Island Arena Tournament
Every Sunday between 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. (AEST - server time) the denizens of Ateria on Nezekan take part in gentlemen's duels near the western shard in Reshanta. Just kidding—no real gentlemen here! To setup duels and other such shenanigans, head on over to the forum thread for a good end of week round off.
